It's a repro- buy another one. Second and best choice: they are not accurate so as long as it looks good keep the non working one and do yourself a favor and install a temp gauge that really works inside of the car so you really know what is going on with your engine

People have had to take them off, because someone tried to steal it. Usually breaks the neck on the radiator.

If you really want it, just buy a new one from Snyders. Put a spring on the probe so it drips into the water if you want it to read more accurately.

It is not designed to read the temp of the water, only the temp of hot air, or steam. Adding a spring will make it totally ineffective.

I have a MotoMeter on my '31, and a temperature gauge. The MotoMeter looks good and it's a great conversation piece with the public, but I find the red line in the thermometer of the MotoMeter is so slim that I really can't read it from the driver's seat. So to me it's already ineffective. I rely upon the temp gauge.

And I carry an extra radiator cap in case someone decides they need the MotoMeter more than I do.

Not likely it dried up but only is contained in the bulb potion of the glass tube. Try holding it in hot, not boiling water, and see if the color will expand back into the tube.
However, like has been said, they are not really for temp of the engine, but mostly for looks.

The reproduction motor meters are mostly for decoration. It will only register when your radiator is boiling over.
