Poured 5 gallons of gas into the tank and there was a quart sized puddle of gas underneath the filler hose. It was the hose. Came from napa 6 ot 7 years ago. years ago, but the type with no cord reinforcement. Crack was just outside of the tank's fill neck. I took my tonner in and gonna replace the hose with the good type reinforced fuel fill hose tonight after dinner. Dang...

A simple 20 minute fuel hose repair turned into a 3 hour safety project. While everything was out of the way I fabricated a heavy 'safety cage' between my fuel fill and the rear tire, having seen the photos posted here about a tire coming apart and tearing the filler neck and hose out, leading to a disasterous fire. Now multiply that x 2 when you are in a car made out of kindling! OK, it's time to get out there on the 'open road' and take that long anticipated run up the three long grades I have battled for 45 years. The woodie has never pulled any of them in high gear.

Happy to report I could not possibly be happier with this engine/tranny combo. I can now accelerate up those same hills in fourth gear. Another thing I really like is that in first gear, I now have decent compression braking on the way down my 1/2 mile gravel road. No brakes used. Maybe the biggest surprise is that on a level road I can maintain my normal 35-40 and I am barely pressing the gas pedal. It is now an entirely different vehicle. I sincerely thank all of you that offered your knowledge and experience in guiding me to build a smooth and powerful flathead V8!

That is what a flathead is supposed to sound like. Nothing beats a factory cam for smooth idle and lots of torque. You have the near ultimate combination in my opinion: more cubic inches, carefully set quench with iron heads, factory cam, factory carb, factory distributor. I bet you get great gas mileage too.

Thanks guys! But I realized that still didn't get on my regular channel as far as I know... My son showed up and we made a couple of new ones, including a road run and he was able to load them straight from my phone to my regular youtube channel. There will be some repitition but not much. I never use the channels where the first vids were posted so from now on these will be the ones viewed. I appologize for all this considerable delay and confusion. It makes an engine/trans swap a walk in the park by comparison. Sheesh.......

I've been involved in some dysfunctional scenes over the years, and these youtube attempts are no exception. I have learned a lot in the process and hope to make some more in the future (If I remember how). Thanks for your patience.
Speaking of dysfunctional I was in the shop last night til 2:05 am buttoning up the front clip and radiator install and actually installed the thermostats. Got it fired up at about 1:30 and all was well. My son came by after work and we started with the hood, then onto the nose itself. He had some good ideas as we have struggled with those carraige bolts through the funny eliptical holes at the cowl corner. (never fun). He left at 9 with all the heavy stuff done. I'm thinking of getting done in the wood shop early and cranking my ragged old woodie up and hauling my tired ol' ass into town. It has about two years of dust on it and it kinda looks the part of the mountain wagon. One thing it ain't is a surf wagon. I have not yet faced Flaherety's Hill or Mt Woolard Hill and I will at least hit Flahrety's today on my way home. Our parade is on Saturday. Supposed to be real hot for here. Maybe 85. Would a fan shroud be insurance against overheating? I have no history of this rig and it's radiator yet in slow, hot parade duty. I have a shroud . Thanks.

Yes - having a shroud would surely help pull air through the radiator . . . put it on. Also, great job making your deadline - you've really been humping to do this!
