Does anyone here know of a reasonably priced place to have a license plate restored? I found a plate to match my '48 merc that not only matches the year, but matches the county I live in. It's not bad but I would like it to match the car as far as finish goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. Tom

There was at least one post on this subject not too far back, if this link doesn't work, do a search in the box of the dashboard immediately above the posts.

***NOTE**** Tom, I just noticed you are from Florida, last I was aware.....Florida will not let you use a "restored" tag as the official registered permanent tag UNLESS they have changed recently??? You may want to check that out BEFORE you spend the money IF you were planning on using it that way.
OR IF you have a "good" original finish tag you CAN have that made into your permanent driver tag for the vehicle.

I don't know if Florida routinely checks to see if original plates have been restored/refinished or not, but New York also does not allow restored plates. What most people do in NY is send pictures of the unrestored plate to the NYSDMV and when they get their paperwork and get everything legal, then get them restored. That being said, I don't think there is a cop in the country that would issue a citation for "restored plate". I would also bet that don't even know the "unrestored" rule. I can understand if the plate was painted in some crazy color, but if the original colors are used, so what. I know of a '32 Ford that has the rustiest, almost unreadable plate and it was approved by the NYSDMV. It makes no sense.

I believe that in FL you have to actually mail your unrestored plate to the DMV for their approval.

If it doesn't need a bunch of metal work, the price is $250, but make sure it's clear with the state, or it will be a wall hanger

Would you mind sharing advice/Recomendations on how or what to use on preserving the "existing" finish BUT to stop/kill rust....Like on these plates???

My advise would be to not let your ego get in the way. If the plate you have is in decent shape, register it to the car as a YOM. Then quietly have it repainted..

I sent a 49 Florida plate to DMV for approval for my 49 coupe. They turned it down because the vehicle weight was not on the title.
