I have replaced my inside door handles on my 55 fairlane. The old handles had a round back on them and the new handles have a triangle shape to them. The old handles fit tight no problem, the new handles have a hard time staying on, it's as if the clips don't fit tight around the new handles with the triangle shaped back.
If I shut the door hard enough the new handles will fall of, I put the old handles back on and no problem. I purchased the clips with the new handles: Can I buy new handles with the round back ? Maybe I have the wrong clips for the new handles?

You may have been sent the wrong handles.
Do your old handles look like the one at this link? I don't have any off the car or I'd include photos of a real one. https://www.classictbird.com/Handle-...ctinfo/22600A/ . Last edited by dmsfrr; 05-06-2020 at 09:09 AM. |

I can't tell, I have to see the back side of the handle to see if it has a round mount or what I call rectangle.

I got the same type handle when I replaced mine on 55 Crown. Had to do some creative bending on the clips to make them seat in enough for the two side of the clip to grip the shaft. I think the triangle shape is a reproduction item. Mine have been on for about 5 years now.

I have a few of those repro door handles that have the back that looks like a tripod rather than a circle. I had plenty of old used clips, but the new ones are just as good as far as having the same springy value.
These repro handles will work with either the new or old clips (if the old clips are in good condition). Even if they have been stretched, you can carefully use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to squeeze the ends together a little, but not too much or it will be too hard to get the handle to pop onto the shaft. Here's the best way to install: Place your metal anti-scratch ring onto the door upholstery around the door handle shaft. (It is a MUST to have this or the door handle will eventually tear your upholstery up). Now, insert the "C" clip into the slot on the back of your door handle. Next insert the door handle into the shaft until the clip stops it. Take the palm of your hand and strike the meat of the base of the door handle and it will pop on permanently (until you remove the clip with your remover tool). |

Having found these handles hard to stay on, I have taken a rubber mallet and gave the handle a whack. Crude? probably, but it works and does not hurt the handle
