I just bought a '30 coupe that needs shocks. When I look at Bratton's on-line catalog they offer "square valve" and "hex valve". Snyder's does not make a distinction. Can someone educate me? Is this a distinction without a difference?

Look in the judging standards. It has to do with the year of the car.

the judging only covers so much of the shocks and how look on the outside. be careful on the valves, they are not only different on the top but they also have some that are different in length. there around 37 different shock made for the Model A`s

All I want is to know what I need for my '30 coupe!! Didn't know it was this difficult! I'll consult the judging standards.

Any shock sold by any vendor will work on any model A. That's easy. Now, while you are at it do you want the ones that most closely match what was on the car when built? See the Guidelines. You want shocks that work exactly like the original and you can even replace the covers with original covers, then you need the ones built by Stipe. P.S. (The guidelines show no less than 3 different needle valves depending on the month for 1930, that's just the Houdaule shocks not the Spicer, National Acme, or the Ford.)
