4 for a road trip in a roadster pickup! Sure!
There have been times when I wished I could take more than one passenger with me somewhere in the pickup, and short of tying Grandmas rocking chair in the back like Beverly Hillbillies, I was sure it couldn't be done.
We had some rear seats out of a 10str van for cleaning and I jokingly thought what a great photo opportunity!! But it has started me thinking about the legalities of rear seating in a pickup?? When I was a kid and before seatbelts were compulsory, we used to sit quietly in the back of a ute on the way back from an outing without it being an issue. Can you still do that with a vehicle that never had belts at all? Does anyone transport passengers in the back of a pickup now? I am unsure of the rules here in NZ, I wonder if i can mount this seat arrangement without an issue, or would i have to go through the whole engineers/certification process? Not that i am too serious about it.. Kindest regards Steve |

Put a glass bubble over it and you've got yourself a Popemobile! I bet NZ will have rules preventing you from doing this. Good luck with the red tape.

Back in about 1960 my Dad took me and some of the neighbor kids for a ride in the back of the Model A pickup, was only going to go a few blocks, got stopped and ticketed. In Illinois. So it was illegal then. He would have probably been OK, but decided to do it on the Main Street in town, should have stayed on the side streets in the neighborhood. The Cop made Dad call my Mom to come and get us kids, Cop did not leave until we were in my Moms car. I remember all us kids were pretty quiet until after the Cop left. |

In the late-60s, I'd haul a few buddies around in the bed of my truck, also a 30 CCPU and also in Illinois. Never got stopped but it was a small town in an agricultural community so pickup bed riding was pretty common. |

I don't know if its the Duck from the movie "Convoy" But it is the "Deathproof Duck" from the movie "Deathproof" with Kurt Russell. He had it mounted on ther hood of his stunt car which i think was a Nova.. This one is 1/4 size 3D printed. I wanted something different. |

Re: 4 for a road trip in a roadster pickup! Sure!
Hi there
This is how it was done in the old days & no seats involved. Photo from the late 1950's, I am on left, lowest down next to my sister; we are off to the beach in a neighbours '30 light commercial with deck & cab [ note offset rear window] by local provider. I would contact NZTA & see if you can get any sense but I would say it would now be illegal except for dogs! Cheers Tom in NZ |

Re: 4 for a road trip in a roadster pickup! Sure!
Hi Steve,
Legalities aside, I have taken two grown up youngsters in the back, around the block once and found the rear spring bottoming out on the slightest little bump. Might only be my pickup.

Re: 4 for a road trip in a roadster pickup! Sure!
Nice Model A Steve, love the license plate!. A few years ago our coupe was out of action and we ended up hitching a ride in the back of a friends pickup for the club run. We had a great time, and the only problem was our dead butts, when we tried to stand up.
