Greetings and salutations; what are the people's thoughts of adding a oil breather flex tube to your engine? Wife and I went on a 75 mile ride this weekend and all she did was complain about the smell of oil flumes in the car! Do I add a breather tube or don't let her ride anymore?

Breather tube really helps. Keeps firewall clean, no funny smells.
Enjoy. |

How much blow by do you have? Engine overhauls aren't cheap, neither are divorces !

Like mine -- the only problem I had was when changed oil, didn't put the funnel down far enough, before discovered oil I was adding was going to the floor thru the breather line.

Maybe SHE needs the "breather tube". Seriously though, I have one on my A and I don't notice any oil fume smell in the car.

Installed one about 4 years ago, really helps with fumes and oil mist. I like to keep my engine compartment tidy. This picture was taken about a year after the install. A long neck funnel is needed for oil changes.

You'll be able to stop the fumes coming in by opening the windscreen a little and closing the other windows, assuming you are in a closed car. Doing that gives a slight positive air pressure in the car and stops the fumes entering. I do that to stop the HOT air coming in around the pedals. (On a RHD car, the exhaust pipe is between the clutch and brake pedals)

I have very little blow by from my engine so there was hardly any smell, but my wife could smell it. The breather tube helped.

Geee, it would be cheaper to leave the wife at home. Those breather tubes are $35.00.
Actually I installed one and they work great. |

Thanks for all the positive responses! The engine is a fresh rebuild, but the wife has a sensitive nose! I'll tell to let Santa get one for Christmas

If you keep your eye out you may find a FUMAZE at a swap meet. There are originals and reproductions.
The originals have are marked FUMAZE PAT. PEND P.O.B. MFG.CO CINN. O. and the tube is seamed. The reproductions are marked FUMAZE PATENTED IN USA, and the tube is not seamed, it is solid pipe. see below photos

No alterations to your engine pan. In fact, the engine pan adds to it's effectiveness. I've been using one for 10 years now. works great!

A total rebuild is funner and a whole lot cheaper. Also can be justified as it's for her.
Because Dear I love you. |

kick her ass to the curb. Once you fix the fumes problem she’ll find something else to complain about.
