Looking for a machine shop in SW Florida
Hello fellas. Been away for a while. Back at it and found a crack from the valve seat to the cylinder. If anyone can suggest a good machine shop I can go to in southwest Florida I would appreciate it. Thanks ahead of time.

Re: Looking for a machine shop
My machinist/rebuilder (who does many flatheads and rare and unusual old car motors) who was doing my 59A found a similar crack, and he refused to work on it any more. He said he wouldn’t warrant it, and he said any repair would at best would have 80% chance of holding. Talked to several other machine shops and flathead people, and I did get some opinions that it could be pinned and resleeved, but nobody said it was going to last with no chance of failure. So I found another motor without cracks.
Good luck. |

Re: Looking for a machine shop
I had the same experience as Bruce two years ago in the Chicago area. The flathead machinist I was using could not guarantee the repair would hold up. I ended up finding a better block.

Re: Looking for a machine shop
I can understand not wanting to guarantee it but I don’t understand what happens that makes it fail. I just repaired one and pinned it and installed a new valve seat. I pressure tested it full of water with 50 PSI of air supplied and no leaks. I’ve seen my long time machinist repair many of them . Some of them been running more than twenty years. A friend of mine brought me an assembled short block for me to bolt on the heads, etc for his car that came from a well known builder on the west coast. I noticed it had been repaired in a couple of valve seats with pins and it looked like an old repair. That was six years ago and it’s still running fine.

Re: Looking for a machine shop
VicPiano of Tampa/Orlando (Cigar City Flatheads) might be a good contact. He's apparently not an engine builder as such but probably knows good people to recommend.

I would suggest editing the title of your post and change it looking for a machine shop in FL. You'll get the attention of those members who live in FL. |

Re: Looking for a machine shop
Thanks for the advice guys. I was able to find another engine few hours from home. Looks like a good one but I still have to clean it up to get a better look.
