Default Does anyone know

Working my way across the dash, wipers done now working on the clock 47 Ford, anyone have a schematic on how it comes apart or goes together it's assembled but would like to clean it up and lubricate a bit, not sure if it works, ordered new wiring, but been yrs sitting. Do we have any clock rebuilders on here that would share their knowledge or approach to do this. Don't want to botch it up and am a hands on guy that's why I would like to do it.

There are a set of points that close and activate an electro magnet that winds the clock enabling it to run for 5 or 10 minutes and the cycle repeats itself. Usually the points are corroded and need to be cleaned. Repairing the clock works is another can of worms.

I had to do extensive work on my clock to get it to work. There was actually a part broken that I had to fabricate a substitute to get it working.

I would suggest that you just hook it up to 6 volts and see what happens. (Polarity doesn't matter.) If it winds and starts ticking you're in business for starters then you leave it hooked up and let it tick for 5 minutes to see if it will rewind itself. If so, you're done other than adjusting the speed to keep the correct time. If, when you hook up power, it doesn't wind or winds but won't tick let us know and we'll tell you what to do next.

I have taken many apart. Carefully pry off the chrome bezel, after holding the hand adjusting shaft and removing the knob. bezel and knobs usually come off quite eaisily. take out the small screws on back case and remove. Movement comes out with face intact. On most I just use a liberal amount of WD40 and spray to clean it (many times it just starts up), hook it up to 6 volt (pos ground) and give it a little shake. IN MOST CASES it works. Then bench test it for a week or so to adjust the timing. Clean bezel and chrome inside out and when ready put it back together in reverse order. I try not to pull the hands off as the hour hand is very tight and if pulled too hard will bend the holding washer they put on to keep it engaged with gears. Face can be cleaned with soft cloth and water. On some the numbers are painted on the inside of the glass so be careful in cleaning the inside of the glass. Its amazing how much of this old stuff usually just needs a good cleaning and it is good to go.

good luck

I use Tuner Cleaner and Lubricant from Radio Shack to lube the clock. I did mine 5 years ago and it still keeps time.
