Missing Parts Numbers? Field Coils Parts?
I can find the part numbers for the field coils for the 1929-31 generators, but don't see the field poles and screws to hold them in place. Does anyone know the numbers for these parts? Thanks
BTW, in 1931 the field coils only cost $1.00. |

Re: Missing Parts Numbers? Field Coils Parts?
Found some info in the green book. The basic number for the pole piece is 10041
but no listing for the Model A. The screw shown for the Model A is 350505-S 3/8"-16 X 11/16' flat head machine screw, I can't find this number in the 32 or 37 parts book. Bob |

Can't remember what went where, but somewhere in there the screw changed between slotted and square recess. Maybe that's why the number vanished if the later version was the only screw like that or of that length Ford used, and the later became the replacement.

All the other generators in the green book show screw 68-10044 7/16"-14 X 21/32".

Did Ford make the generators or was it Autolite?

My guess is that because the generator frame assembly (A-10078) was the basis of the generator and not subject to failure there was no need to offer it. I am surprised they don't list the screw (A-20771) in the "Generator" section but you will find it in the back. For what it's worth I believe the pole assembly number is A-10040-C.

Re: Missing Parts Numbers? Field Coils Parts?
FWIW, the 68 part number indicates introduction in 1936 Model year. I suppose the change to a Ford part number from the standard hardware number marks the change to a square drive slot so the thing was no longer a regular screw classified only by head style and dimensions.

This can get confusing and interesting. I went to the MAFFI site and put in A10040 and A10041, both came up pole piece. Tired A10044 and it came up with generator and starter pole piece screw.

Re: Missing Parts Numbers? Field Coils Parts?
The long generator was Auto-Lite's design and produced by them. However there was likely another supplier making them to Auto-Lite's specs. I have noticed there are both seamed and seamless housings. I don't know however if it's a supplier issue or a dated change. It could even be suppliers to Auto-Lite.

Re: Missing Parts Numbers? Field Coils Parts?
Today I measured the thickness of 2 pairs of pole shoes, which I just removed from Model A cases, and one pair is .012" less than the other. That would add considerably to the air gap and result in a lower output.

Wow, I just checked the MAFFI site after hearing of the part # app. Holy cow! What a great resource. I can't believe this isn't mentioned more..... Or maybe I need to pay attention more. Either way, Is the green book you guys are referring to the "Gem from the River Rouge" by Murray Fahnestock, or "How to Restore the Model A"?
