Default Colorsanding and buffing

I have a question concerning polishing paint after colorsanding. I have done some polishing with a 7" variable speed electric polisher. The problem I have is getting the polishing compound flung all over the place. I have tried different ways like starting real slow and using my hand to spread the compound over the area to be polished. I still end up with the polishing compound flung all over the place and making a mess. There must be a trick that I am missing or maybe not (it is always messy). If anyone has a good method of minimizing the mess, please post what it is.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You may want to try a good orbital polisher like those sold by Griot's Garage - I think they are manufactured bt Porter Cable.

I usually put the compound on the buffer pad then run it slow for a second or two, then speed it up. Seems to help a bit with the 'sling factor', as does not applying too much compound.

I don't worry about it. You are going to wash (flood) the area with soapy water when you are done compunding before you apply the polish and then the wax. If we have one area that is critical that compound must not enter, we use 18" masking paper and tape it off. Otherwise you can spend more time trying to keep it clean rather than get the job done and do your clean-up afterwards.
