Multiple Disc Clutch Usage

Anyone used or have experience using the multiple disc clutch.I have several spares and an engine that was fitted with one though most tell me to change to the regular style of clutch.As well I have one MDC that appears heavier than the rest,I think it might be out of a larger truck,could this be interchanged and work in a smaller closed cab pickup?

Multidisc work fine as long as the ribs inside the flywheel hub aren't notched too badly. By heavier, do you mean the flywheel looks heavier? The later multidisc flywheels had a recess cut into the outside for clearance of the new starter drive. It's pictured in the SERVICE BULLETINS.

Thanks for your reply Tom.By heavier,I was referring to the clutch itself.Several that I have are thinner overall from front to back,while the bigger or deeper one is significantly thicker front to back.I thought it was probably just out of a commercial Model a truck for 1928.Interesting note on the flywheel,I'll check mine out.
Were these clutchs known to be noisy,one restorer says they can howl quite badly.Another says they need regular cleaning out to work properly.I've not heard from anyone thats actually used or using one.

Your heavier/thicker clutch may be from a Lincoln. The multi-disc clutch set-up that was used in the A was a scaled down version of the one that was used in the larger-sized Lincoln.

I ran a MD clutch on my 28AR RPU until I replaced it with a 39 transmission/mitchell overdrive with V8 clutch. Worked great especially with thick trans steam cylinder oil to slow the gears down! Replaced because my brother gave me a 39 trans with new gears for free from his 70/80s V8 days.

Hello Texas,Just out of curiosity why would you run a water soluable steam cylinder oil in a transmission?I am a steam engineer and get the stuff for free.Works much better in a HS lubricator though.Dan

Oh, it seems the model a guys like 600w so I got some 460 and 640 viscosity steam cylinder oil and tried it. I put 240w in the 39 transmission.
