53 Ford Ranchwagon Hood Springs

My hood hinges have two different types of springs. The flat coil type, and the regular extension spring. My flat coil springs are in tact, but the extension springs are gone/broken. What is the purpose of the extension spring? Is it to assist in opening, and hold open? If so I might just use a broomstick. I thought they would be easy to find, but not so. I can get the flat coil, but not the extension springs. Thanks for help.
