timing
i'm about to install my new distrib.when i use the pointer/detent to find tdc how do i know if i'm on the compression or exhaust stroke.?

#1 plug removed will be pumping air out

The detent in the cam gear peeking through the hole in the timing cover will set the piston at TDC between the compression stroke and the power stroke. (if the cam gear is correct). You can also put your thumb over the spark plug hole as it comes up to TDC and feel the compression pushing against it.

The indent is on the camshaft gear.
It can ONLY be on TDC firing stroke. You may be thinking about a crankshaft pulley mark , it can be TDC on the wrong stroke. |
