Default Engine Number question

We're looking at a 1929 closed cab pickup. The engine serial number is C1496. This is confusing....why would this number be used? Anyone got a clue?

CA is Canadian number. If it doesn't have a star before the
C and after the number than it's some kind of restamp.

If the number pad is SMOOTH, it's been RE-STAMPED.

So very true and sometimes you will be able to see the original number if you look hard enough.

There has been all sorts of cases like this with many different letter codes and numbers.

Re-stamping IS/WAS a common practice, when installing a different engine.

Well, upon closer inspection, the number is actually G1496 (not a C at the beginning). The plate is not smooth...the texture feels the same as the adjoining areas. The stamping is not aligned very well. Can see any evidence of other numbers, looking carefully with a light and with enlarged photos.

But I now have info from the title records, which show a VIN of A3131693. Don't know where this came from but probably from an earlier title.

So my very uneducated question: If the engine is a replacement, why re-stamp it?

Wish we could go back in time to answer that question.

Maybe it was already stamped BEFORE it was installed by whoever instaled it in the firsat place?

Are you in the wheat belt? That is a Baldwin Gleaner combine engine number.[/QUOTE]

You nailed it, Forever4. The vehicle came from Missouri (it's now in Texas) and was restored there in the 1990's. I found an article on FordGarage.com that includes a picture of an engine plate identical to the one in this pickup. The history makes sense! You guys are a fantastic source of info! Thanks.
