Default Cutout voltage

I got a box of cut outs on ebay. One of them turned out to be a voltage regulator. Anyone know a way to tell if it is 6v+ or 12v-?

If it has only one component under the cover, then it's the diode type of cutout and not a regulator.

If it has a bunch of components under the cover the a call to "Fun Projects" is in order as they are the only ones that make that type.

I would see what happens when you put a 6v battery charger across it. The 6v battery charger is probably putting about about 7.5 or 8 v so should trigger a 6v regulator, but not a 12 v one- assuming of course that the regulator is actually functioning correctly!

If'n it's a Fun Projects regulator the cover will be welded on.

Good way to wreck it!

Fun projects would look at it and repair if necessary for $20 if the top was still welded on. However the top was no longer welded on when I got it so they would charge $30 to check it out and more to repair. A new one is only $65 so I'll probably just toss it. I bought a grab bag of 7 cutouts on ebay cheap and all the tops were off.

How come? Putting up to 8v through a 6v reg won't wreck it whether its a 6v or 12v reg - many generator's are putting out that voltage.(I agree that putting 12 through a 6v reg ain't a good idea!)

Don't toss it. Just install it but don't connect the wires to the outlet terminal. Connect a volt meter to the outlet and see what it reads at fast idle. If it's good it should read about 7 1/2 volts, or about 14.7 volts if it's for a 12 volt system.
