Default Odd engine number

Have a look at the number on this engine

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-1929-19...item27e16e6723

M3763VV (or W) N

Indications are that it is also a diamond block.

Um. Looking very much as a "users" number done by hand on the flat "as cast" unmachined number location.

Might be a gleaner application? Or a motor-generator? Or a mixer? Or a motorboat? Or a mud-sucker?

I have not heard the "G226" casting connection he cites. Have others information confirming this thought?

The "G226", from the picture, appears to be the date code for a ♦ block. This would be July 22, 1936. "G" = 7 = July, 22 = 22nd, 6 = 1936. From the pic you can see the oil return tube in the foreground and this puts the "G226" in the correct location on the block for the date code.

Yes, all true. And supports what the Ebay seller was saying. But where is all this described? The source doesn't have to be online - probably isn't.

Maybe the judging standards, or a Ford print? Or word of mouth starting with a former Ford employee in the pattern shop?

Not to dispute but G might be the series of patterns (they do wear out) and 22 the branch of a 25 core pattern, and the 6 the code of the patternmaker (so he can be held responsible for a mistake.)

All these would be equally useful to the manufacturer should there start to be rejections in the castings produced by this mould.

"Generally Understood" even works - although not specifically for me yet.

Thank you. I've read and enjoyed MANY of Vince's articles on the 'net - but not that one.

Well, I don't own a diamond block.

Yet.
