1st Marvel impression
So I have a Marvel Carb that I rebuilt as an experiment. I had heard that the speed peoples swear by them so I thought I would try one out. So I bought one off of the bay and found out that it is slightly different than the ones used on Model A's. Mine has a Viton tip fuel inlet valve and the GAV is the same thread and pitch as the one used in a Model A. Other than that it pretty much the same as all of the others.
So I rebuilt it, but it did not run quite right so I gave it a fellow club member Herb Newman who cleaned and tested it for me. So I installed her and finally got her fired up. It does not want to start up if it has been sitting for a long time. Not sure why that will take some more investigating. But she idles very nicely, better than a Zenith from my limited experience with it. The next test was to see what she did on the road. I got her out and after fiddling with the GAV I got her dialed in. The GAV is off by half a turn from my Zenith. Closed is now at 6 o'clock. So I opened her up to about 3 and she ran not well but she ran. So I opened her up to 12 o'clock and she smoothed right so I try and leaver her there. I also noticed that with the Zenith, if I adjust the spark there is no real noticeable difference in RPM or power changes. But if I try and accelerate with the spark retarded now she just won't move. So now I HAVE to make sure the spark is advanced, it is that noticeable. Now, I got bold and took her on the freeway. Normally I cruise around 50-51 which seems to be her sweet spot. With the Marvel that spot moved up to 55 easily. I have not calculated the gas mileage yet but I am hoping it won't drop to much. She has power and an 'accelerator pump' if you want to call it that. So over all when I get her dialed in I will really like it. And the best part is....NO STALLING IF I HIT THE BRAKES HARD! Mike

We can't speak too loudly about how nice the Marvels are. Everyone will want one.

Re: 1st Marvel impression
And mine! I've heard lots about them on this forum and I have one that looks OK but when I put it on, it poured fuel on the ground. Needle and seat required, I think but no idea what else it might need.

Re: 1st Marvel impression
I like mine! GAV is way off what I read in the books that a Zenith or Tillot would be as well. I sent mine to Dave Renner in Michigan and he did a great job rebuilding it.

The thread pitch of the GAV is finer than the Zenith, so you WILL need to open the GAV more than the Zenith to compensate

Re: 1st Marvel impression
So if I type in Marvel Carburetor, I get information on 9N Tractor carbs. What should I bet asking for?

Re: 1st Marvel impression
Hi Mike, glad to here your Marvel carb is working for you!
When i ran it on my P/U, it ran best with the GAV fully closed, strange? Dave, I'll be happy to rebuild yours, just order a gasket kit and the GAV seal kit from Renners Corner and bring it on over and I'll rebuild it for you. For other barn members, I have a Marvel on my '31 Slant T/S and on my '31 Roadster P/U, both run better than the Tillostsons that were on before. The Marvels are also the easiest start carb I have ever had. Herb Neumann Concord CA |

Re: 1st Marvel impression
The latest acquired 31' tudor came with a Zenith carburetor. Though the Zenith like the rest of the mechanical stuff on the car looks to be rebuilt, there was always a strong smell of gasoline with spark plugs badly fouled and actually wet with un-burned fuel. In my long standing humble opinion, Model A variety Zenith carburetors suck. So, as long standing tradition has it, an alternate carburetor was acquired and the Zenith pulled off being now used for a big paper weight. The thing is too shiny and interesting looking to throw into the junk bin.
The Marvel Schebler carburetor was purchased from a guy in Texas on eBay who "re-manufactures" both that brand and Tillotsons too. Without doubt, that 31' with the Marvel carburetor is the smoothest running A Model Ford I have ever owned. And yes, with the slightest tug on the choke knob, the car starts up instantly every time. Life is better again! Last edited by Capt Quahog; 07-24-2016 at 11:07 PM. |

Re: 1st Marvel impression
Hi Herb,
Sorry about middling your last name, I had a 50/50 shot and lost. That is why I don't gamble. It might be that the jet has finer holes than the replacement jet. But then again the fuel inlet valve is smaller than the ones made for the A. Mike

Re: 1st Marvel impression
Huge help that Renners has started supplying parts and rebuild for Marvels or Allstates as he calls them.
They sure are good carbs and don't seem to have the warpage probs that Tillys do. A well-fitted zenith is a thing of beauty and my personal preference but I always carry a spare Marvel...mostly for helping others. |

Re: 1st Marvel impression
I believe Marvels were sold by Ford as replacements after production years. Later they switched to Tillotson

Re: 1st Marvel impression
While we're on it...where did the name Marvel come from?
Was there a Mr. Marvel? I thought Schebler was the inventor of both the carb and the oil(Marvel Mystery Oil). I'm ready for a good story to go with a good carb. |

Re: 1st Marvel impression
marvel carbs and schebler carbs were separate companies eons ago, and they merged. doubt this has anything to do with Mystery Oil
