Gemmer Box Rebuild; Upper Race to Steering Shaft Clearance
I'm about to begin rebuilding my 2-tooth Gemmer box (came out of a '30 Tudor) and was curious if someone has a spec on the steering shaft to upper race clearance. My worm looks decent and the races do not show signs of unusual or excessive wear. There does, however, appear to be quite a bit of clearance between the topside of the upper race and the steering shaft itself.
The bore on the topside of the upper race measures 1.077" and the steering shaft itself is roughly 0.89". Is this normal or should the upper race fit tighter to the steering shaft? |

That bore in the upper race is not supposed to touch the shaft at all.The bearing rides on the worm race, and the bottom of the upper race rides on that.No direct contact between the shaft and the race.

I assume you are rebuilding the steering by following the SERVICE BULLETINS, so you know about the bolt with lock nut that pushes the upper race down to take up end play.
Don'e overtighten the bolt. I've seen a couple cracked races, and can only imagine it was caused by forcing the bolt too tight. |
