nasty oil filter
This is from a '59 361 V8 FE with 99000 miles on it. I bought the car Jan of 2015 and changed the oil and filter then. I did add a zinc additive also. I have put about 1200 miles on it since. The more I drive the car the better it seems to run and the motor has gotten very quiet with no lifter noise.
I decided to go on and change the oil since it was looking really bad. The oil plug has a magnet in it and had a small amount of deposits on it similar to what you would see on the oil plug from a differential just not grey but black. I decided to cut the filter open and found a good bit of crud inside that is mildly magnetic. My question is, is the HD oil cutting 57 years of built up carbon and crud out of the engine and would this crud have metal deposits in it? I plan on changing the oil much more often until this crude stops showing up. thanks in advance |

Re: nasty oil filter
I'm surprised that those large particles get past the pick-up screen.

Re: nasty oil filter
A lot of Ford engine pick up screens have a dime sized hole under the metal strap that runs across the screen. Not sure about yours. 60's SBF were notorious for picking up a piece of crumbled valve stem seal, locking up the oil pump and twisting the oil pump shaft off. Could be a very expensive repair if the owner kept driving it.

Re: nasty oil filter
I have built several engines in the past, but none as old as this one. I have never seen this much crud in one. It runs smooth and quiet, its just scary to see this much crud in the filter. I plan to just keep running it and changing the oil frequently hoping to get most of this out of it.

Like most folks, I change the oil in my cars (old & new) when the oil is hot. On older, unknown engines, I will add a quart of kerosene and allow the engine to idle for about 5 minutes before draining. Seems to help in releasing a lot of crud. Just a thought Jim |
