39 Ford rear hub question
Folks,
I’m doing the rear brakes on my 39 Ford Coupe. I removed the rear drum/hub using the Vintage Precision puller, worked like a charm. Removed the snap ring, seal and bearing. After cleaning everything up I noticed another snap ring groove between the seal and bearing. In all the parts listings it does not show a snap ring there, just the one on the outside of the seal. My question is: has anyone installed 2 snap rings in the rear hub? If so, has there been any adverse wear on the bearing? My thoughts, although I may be over thinking this, it would be better for the bearing to be against a snap ring versus the seal. Any thoughts? Thanks Tom |

Re: 39 Ford rear hub question
On my 40 Ford it fits together as shown below using the outer most snap ring groove and only one snap ring. While you have the snap ring out grind the bevel in the opposite direction to make removal easier next time. The assembly drawing shows bearing goes in first, then the seal, then the snap ring. When I first removed my rear hub in 1963, that's the way it was assembled. I am pretty sure 39 is the same.

Re: 39 Ford rear hub question
Tom,
19Fordy has offered you accurate and great advice. Especially the part about grinding the snap ring for future removal. This is exactly how your '39 drums were originally assembled. I have to laugh at your post in regard to you possibly overthinking this. Welcome to my world Yes, you are overthinking this. There have been quite literally millions of Fords assembled as described previously with wonderful results. This is one area that attempting to reinvent the proverbial wheel is not worth the effort.
