Default Adjusting clutch fingers

Is this where to place the ruler to measure and adjust clutch fingers to 5/8 inch per Les Andrews?

Yes it is!!!! Take the 5/8 inch measurement from the bottom of the ruler to the top of the finger.

Ford specified that that distance should be 11/16". Any more or less will effect where the clutch will grab when you depress the pedal. So get it as close as you can.

I find the adjustment much less critical if you use color.

(actually I did not know about the 5/8 value... I set it at the Ford 11/16 and it engages right where I want it)

But it still needs color

The adjustment is 11/16", but, many are/have been set to 5/8". Either works well.
That said, all fingers should within .002" , so, just a ruler doesn't work very well.
There are several ways to do this, but, I have turned a chunk of round stock just to make sure it is truly round [ .625" , 5/8"] . Then that is used for the adjustment, I set each finger to a slight even drag between the straight edge and the finger end. Once set, tap lightly the fingers just to be sure they're set and check them all again.

x2 on this one. I usually press and release all the fingers a few times before I start and after each adjustment, but before measuring, I press and release the finger again.

Once I get the adjustment set, I press, release and measure a couple more times....just to be sure. (maybe it's overkill, but it works for me)

There is an article that might be helpful to you. Got to the web site of the Santa Anita A's of Arcadia, California at santaanitaas.org. On the home page put your curser on "Technical Reference", my name will appear below, click on it and it will bring up a menu of articles. Scroll to clutch plate adjustment. It is a pdf file and you are welcome to download it and print it out.

My experience has been with the fingers set between 5\8" and 3\4" will put the clutch release point somewhere in the middle of the pedal stroke. 11\16" being nominal is where I set it.
