Default Rebuilt steering box?????

I have a 78 year old friend with a 1929 coupe that likes to drive... Original steering box setup. He was told to put a 30/31 unit in his car by some club members and spend the $425.00 rebuilt... I told him it does not stop there..You will need to buy a steering wheel at $150.00 for starters..I sent him the website to review www.ezsteer.net .... Is that good advise i gave him.. I have no idea in this matter... thank you... I told him just rebuild the original unit...but he needs easier steering ,,i guess...so Nick said so?

In my opinion, your advise (to rebuild existing unit) was right on. I rebuilt my 7 tooth box and all other factors involved in the steering, resulting in extremely nice steering.

It would be easily steerable by someone who had very little strength in arms, etc.

I rebuilt my 7 tooth for my 29 huckster and it work out great.

BTW I have a 7 tooth column with wheel advertised in the Swap Meet. The guy I got it from said it had been "rebuilt" (but don't know quality of this rebuild). It looks like it needs the horn/light rod and it looks like somehow they put a 30/31 wheel on the thing. If interested PM me and we can see how to get it across the country.

Rebuild the original steering and column and add the shortened pitman arm and your friend should be good to go.

You can get a shortened pitman arm from Brattons to save the time and trouble of doing your own.

What about using a F1 steering box ? Heard way to many bad things about the Ez Steer unit. IMO a waste of money.

NO NO NO NO on the ez steer. If you want to modify go with the F-100 unit. But if you've decided to go with rebuilt,he'll be good to go.

I have a rebuilt 7 tooth steering box in my 28 pickup. Very easy steerring. Shortened Pitman Arm. Teflon Easy Steer kit in the Tie Rod and Drag Links Ends. Get the Toe In right.

The end of the shaft was built back to factory size and all new bushings and bearings on hte inside.

The only good thing I've heard is that he has sold over a thousand of these units. That would be good for John, not the 1,000 customers.

Bad thing is that I was one of the 1,000. It's coming out of mine in a couple of weeks. Being replaced with an F100 box.

Just a couple of things people on the barn warned me about when I rebuilt my 7 tooth. Be sure that the exterior column is not cracked where the spark and gas levers are. Mine was and I had it welded. Also do have them use the steering gear end plate with the long tube on it. This keeps the oil from leaking out into the light switch. Also make sure they replace all bearings and bushings. Other that that, good luck and I think they will like it.

A properly rebuilt 7-tooth box with short P-arm etc willwork well, but a 29 2-tooth column with needle brgs on sector & thrust, along with short P-arm etc will be almost like power steering.

The good thing about EZsteer is there are no adjustments possible. The bad thing is that many people report that it is unadjusted, right out of the box. It works like modern car parts- you can't adjust it, you just replace it.
