Default Shock Absorber Main Shaft Seal????

I was just playing some and dug out some original seal material on the main shaft.

I surprised to find it appears to be a cloth with rubber.

So can someone tell me how they were sealed originally?

Was it some kind of pre-formed seal?

Was it some strips of cloth with rubber wrapped around the shaft and bonded together somehow?

What seal made today works?

Thanks,

Kevin

the original seals were made of rubber with some fabric, the seals you get today are rubber, make sure if you order a seal kit it is NOT the one with just has orings in the kit they will leak in a short time, ask them if they have the correct seal or just and oring, if you take a cross secion of the seal it is three sided, if you need a picture of one let me know, john

O-rings will work if the shaft and cover surfaces are smooth. Same is true for the 3-sided seal. Get the metal surfaces as smooth as you can get them.
