As mentioned in the notice above, helicopters are being used to transport supplies to people who cannot be reached by vehicle. I think large quad copters (drones) could be used at a lower cost, like the ones Amazon is proposing to use. A fleet of quad copters could reach many stranded people.

The Model A Restorer's Club (MARC) met in Asheville this year. Were you there?

Asheville got hit very hard by storm Helene. People in remote locations are trapped with no access, utility power, or cell phone coverage. The news services have multiple articles on the situation, that I encourage you to view. One such article here: https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/30/weath...day/index.html

If you enjoyed the meet in Asheville, or even if you were not able to, I encourage you to help out in any way you can.

Monday Morning Bump.

As you read this - folks are waking
up with no home and possibly
little food or water in
North Carolina.

I dropped off some items at the Hillsborough location this morning. They were on the ball and had a box truck ready to receive donations.

Many rescue helicopters on the TN side are using the airport across the street from me to refuel and to reload. Presently I think there is about 7 or 8 helicopters being used. I have been told there is 3 Blackhawks from Roanoke area, a couple of THP helicopters, 1 from Virginia State Police, 2 from our local hospital group, and a couple privately-owned choppers.

On the NC side there is YouTube content creator Cleetus McFarland's MD500, NASCAR driver Greg Biffle's chopper along with private choppers owned by Hendrick and Joe Gibbs. As I understand it, these are ferrying supplies and passengers from the ravaged NC area back & forth to the Hickory airport.

To see the damage in-person around here makes you sick to your stomach.

No damage, just a storm.

A big reason for the damage to WNC/ETN is "orographic lift." The hurricane pulls vast quantities of water out of the ocean and keeps it suspended in the air. This hurricane was so bad because it was extremely wide and it moved very fast, so it was still carrying huge amounts of water by the time it got to the mountains.

The hurricane spins CCW. As the center tracked NNW over Georgia, those bands of cloud and rain ran right into the Appalachians. The air is forced up over the mountains, and as it gains height, it loses pressure, which cools it, which means it can't carry as much water. So all that water from the Gulf just gets dumped in one spot.

As each successive band passes over, they keep dumping water on the mountains. That's why places were getting 1-2 feet of rain. Then the terrain channels the rain into rivers and the rivers take out everything around them.

Thought’s and prayers for those affected from HELLene, we don’t need to see the devastation in person ! Please stay away if you have no business in those areas. Red Cross, Salvation Army, United Way, and others can use your donations of blood, money, and volunteers .

I have never dedicated this
much time & energy to find
a way to help - but when Helene
began I had a sense of what
was coming based on gut instinct
and memories of the area from
my years delivering vehicles …

When Jay Thompson
took an active interest it presented
an opportunity to share his effort
to help ….

Storm Relief Volunteers are
reporting from North Carolina
that this is the worst flood damage
they have seen since
Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Please Find A Way To Help !
