Default Tie bar damage while adjusting.

I have been adjusting my tie bar for toe in and it is all dinged up from the wrench. Has anyone ever considered filing a couple of flats at one end inside of the endfitting that would accept a cresent wrench? Bill G

I was wondering how well one of those strap wrenches would work? Just a thought.

My vote!

I would be careful filing anything into the HOLLOW tie rod. This might (would) greatly compromise the integrity of the part and make for a very DANGEROUS steering system.

I'm in the process of assembling a huckster from a pile of parts and noticed that the tie rod from a 28-29 front end is a skosh bigger in diameter than the 30-31 tie rod. I ended up using the 30-31 as it was straighter.

James,
I have heard there are hollow original tie rods but mine is a repo and it has the heft of a solid rod. Anyway I am going to take it apart and clean up the threads, refinish the marred end and try to get along without making non-original changes. Thanks Bill G

Boy, you learn something every day. I've owned or restored more than a dozen Model A's and to my knowledge they've all had solid tie rods and I've adjusted toe in by clamping on a vise grip and it seemed to clamp on without distorting.
