Default U-joint casing/cover

I just saw this on ebay......it has an arm as though it is supposed to hang on something, maybe the frame crossmember?

Mine has a bracket welded there, in the second picture, maybe a replacement?

Is the hanger supposed to be there?

According to the Judging Standards the safety lug was dropped in April 1929.
Also the lug should have at least 1/16" clearance, it should not rest
on the cross member.

X2 what Bob C said !

Furthermore, if you ever heard/felt a 'hammering' /thud/metallic sounds and wondered...why is that there. Or maybe you've just got used to such.
There should be some rubber cushion between that mod and cross member..if it is to lay on member as it is. As rear/side motor mounts deteriorate over time, the rear of engine/trans will lower somewhat. At some point, the mounts at side/rear of engine should get attention/freshened up.
That early hookydo that is in first pic, was not made to actually lay on member when installation was new, IMO.
If you take a look at the rear FAM item mount/brace, that goes in exact same location, you will see that it rests on a rubber on top of cross member. IMO, this is a GOOD thing in helping /bracing when engine vibrates / moves and with time settles downward.

OK, I decided to leave it in place....I loosened the rear motor mounts, jacked up the transmission and slipped a 3/16" leftover piece of motor mount rubber between the frame and the hanger.

I replaced the passenger side motor mount the other day( hence the leftover trim piece), and replaced the previously missing mount-to-flywheel housing bolts..it had just been sitting on the mount..no doubt another source of the many bumps and thumps this truck had.....it's pretty tight now...I'm slowly gaining on it!
