Generators ????

I picked up a 48 motor I am using in the 40 P/U. When I did the guy I bought it from made a statement that he thought the generator was converted to 12 Volt. He never ran the motor because he wa building a street rod and using a 350. Is there a way to tell if in fact it is 12 vs 6 volt? It is a two brush with the typical two posts. I have read that field coils could be switched to convert these but I have zero experiance with this issue. Any suggestions?

Bring it to a generator shop and have them spin it and they will tell you. JMO.

If you have a band saw or anything like that with a separate electric motor... just pop the belt off and loop it on your generator... let it spin and check the output voltage.

Anything to make it spin at a decent speed should give you a good enough idea.

I think you'd have to check the field coils' resistance to tell the difference. You can get 12v or any voltage you want out of a 6v generator by swapping the regulator. Amperage is reduced tho.

The later 12V cases are marked 12V. I put a 56 12V case on my 39 gen and it only made 10V at O'Reilly. The 56 arm. would not work. The local Model A restoration shop says the 6V gen will put out 12V if asked to by a 12V reg. I can't find an old shop to check.

Should be able to tell by the windings. 6V has way larger wires on fields & armature.

All good suggestions, thanks, I thought generators put out amperage and regulators controlled voltage, but I may be confusing alternators and generators. I think I will look for a shop that can test it. thanks again

i know of one such shop in edison new jersey ...look up edison gen and starter . they rebuilt mine very good work. i think it was on route 1 in edison
