Default Starter drive assembly

On the starter drive assembly one screw has a tit on the end one has not. which screw goes wear? Also the starter drive sprring clip, how is this mounted? Thank you.

The long screw goes in the far end of the shaft to hold the drive head to the shaft. Be sure the half moon key is in place and in good shape. The short screw must NOT touch the shaft because that end of the spring needs to twist as the drive torque is applied to the pinion and flywheel.

Be sure to use new or very good lock tab washers and make the bend tight to the flat of the hex. I've never had a problem using a good original Bendix.

Thanks Tom You helped me again. I had one of the new type in there. It bound up and went into the ring gear. Lucky no harm to the ring gear or starter. Puting the original back in. Same with points puting orginal back in.

Except for my 28 with the Able starter, I use the new modern starter drives on all my Model As.
