Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Not positive, but think in that time frame they would have been an after market add-on. Even in the early 40s I think most of the filters were a dealer installed option. Someone will have to jump in with when Ford first started offering oil filters as dealer option. There were several suppliers of the add-ons I believe.
Example of add-on installation instructions. |

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
There are 2 different ones---one that fits in place of the original, and one that mounts to head bolts---the 36 restoration book has some pictures, the head mounted one was intended more for trucks, the one that fits on the carb was similar to ones used into 40 or so, later ones had long thumb screw I think, and probably there was more than one company that made them each slightly different

If you want to know what an original 36 accessory oil filter looks like, here are 2 images. If you were looking for an original oil bath air cleaner then I'll have to post some other images.

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Jacob: 36 is the first year that Ford offered an oil filter ( AC style as in Don Rogers photo above) as an accessory. It was not until 1940 that the Fram style filter was available from Ford, again as an accessory and not standard equipment.

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Jacob, Here are some oil bath air filter options for your car for 1936. The two smaller cleaners sit directly on top of the carburetor and are made by Donaldson and United.

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Jacob,
In terms of Oil bath air cleaners, I really like the Donaldson (the left one on Don Rogers picture). They are easy to spot as they have a Large letter "D" on the bottom and a diamond shape around it, below is a link to one I recently saw on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/111730811085...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT |

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Jacob,
I will admit I am the one that purchased the one in the link. There is another on there right now that they claim fits a International truck, but it sure looks like a 35-39 Donaldson oil bath to me. http://www.ebay.com/itm/151782209051...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT |

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
I used the copper mesh air filter for this mock up on my ’36 Ford Roadster.
It is the same as the picture on page 105 of “The 1935/36 Ford Book”. Last edited by gnolnor; 02-03-2016 at 11:51 PM. |

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
I have been told that the large air cleaner (right photo) was a dealer installed option primarily in the dust bowl states such as Kansas. I have an original on my '35 coupe which was purchased and spent its entire life in Kansas. I do not keep any oil in the reservoir.

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Mike, Both Donaldson and United supplied Ford with oil bath air filters in to 1940. However, while the United filter was available throughout the 1940 production, the Donaldson was deemed obsolete in March, 1940.

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Jacob, That is the Heavy Duty Filter. These held much more oil than the "regular" oil bath air filter. Typically these were utilized by large trucks and / or vehicles used in very dusty environments. They were supplied to Ford by both the Handy Governor Corp. and the United Air Cleaner Co.

Re: 36 ford oil bath oil filter
Here are photos of a NOS Heavy Duty Air Cleaner, that I used to have.
This is the one, that was sold in the dusty states and also for heavy duty trucks. MIKE (mikeburch) |
