Default Pertronix Igniter 2

Hey Guys ! I recently purchased an Igniter 2 for my 289 . They tell you that due to the increased spark you can run a wider plug gap for better mileage , etc. , but they don't tell you how much wider . Any suggestions ? ( stock is .034 ) Thanks in advance !

In my experience I have been setting plugs gap at .035 for Y blocks with Pertronix. Both stock and high compression.

Would just the Igniter 2 put out more spark or would the coil need to be a higher output? Pete

Interesting question....
Spark output is based on need , not the coil or the ignition.
Take a 9 to one compression ratio on a Y Block etc and add a "big" coil, the spark output is still based on engine design, compression ratio and actual air fuel mixture. The engine need is still the same.

Same goes with spark plug gaps , they should always follow engine design.
If the factory gap is lets say .032 then .032 is where it needs to run...
The Ignitor doesnt add spark to the engine , it just makes the trigger a little smoother (by replacing the contacts) and lowers the dwell to be more efficient.

Interesting thought in the hot rod world, add compression to a engine ( pistons , head etc) and we need higher spark output, then add two carbs ( richer air fuel) and we need less spark. Kinda comes out even ???

I also have installed a Pertronix Flamethrower 40 k volt coil , so there is increased spark ........

Listen to Bubba. Set your plugs at factory specs and enjoy your smooth ignition.

the igniter does not increase spark voltage, it does increase the accersey of the spark timing, the coil is what increases spark voltage, more voltage the wider you can run plug gap, wider gap expoes the fuel charge to more spark flame so combustion is more complete, you can run.040 plug gap with a 40,000 volt coil ,wider if you run a hotter coil, i have a chevy v/8 with an hei dist which i used to replace the stock points dist, the engine idled 300 rpm more with the hei at the same timing advance, hotter and wider spark will increase engine performance, less hesitation on throttle changes

You can go slightly wider but it doesn't change much, go close to factory. My flathead I run at .030 and the Yblock at .038 all has be fine ..
IF you went HEI you can open them up a bit..

Unless you run fuel injection where the fuel mixtures can be leaned out significantly, then running the spark plug gaps at the factory specs works best. Carbureted engines do not benefit from running the wider spark plug gaps. Where fuel mixtures run rich or the compression ratio has been raised, then reducing the spark plug gaps is the direction to go. For most carbureted applications, 0.035" gaps work well.
