Did you try an original Ford/Merc tube? We don't even know if the manifold is too big or the tube is too small. (Knowing Speedway, I'd bet on the tube being wrong.) If you have a dial calipers, perhaps measure the hole in the manifold and post it here; I'm sure someone can measure theirs so you can make a comparison. I would, but I'm 2200 miles from my shop for the next week.

I am going to make the assumption that you don't have either the original oil file tube or road draft tube for the engine.

Here's a 1949-53 8BA and Merc oil fill tube. Notice that the bottom 1 inch of the tube is a smaller dia. than the rest of the tube main body. It is difficult to get really accurate measurements because those tubes are pressed into the intake really snug and get bent when pulled and twisted out. This tube is pretty darn straight.
OBSERVATIONS:
The bottom 1" reduced unpainted dia. of the tube is 1.371 in.
The unpainted main body of the tube is 1.384 in. Painting it increased the dia. to 1.397 in.
Since the hole in your Edelbrock is 1.385 you could do one of two things. (1) Saw off the bottom 1 inch of your stock OEM tube, paint it with primer and a high quality paint to increase its dia. and then insert it in your Edelbrock. (2) Don't saw off any part of the OEM tube. Slide a piece of pipe or some type of mandrel into the end of your tube so the walls are supported and then take a sharp center punch and make a series of indentations on the outside surface of your tube. This will raise the metal up and increase tube diameter so it will fit tightly in you Edelbrock intake. It's a primitive form of knurling. The last 2 photos show how I did this to custom made chromed plated lower radiator hoses 20 years ago so the rubber hose connectors would get a good grip. Still working. The black tube pictured plus the OEMcap is available if you need it.

If you have access to a lathe, you could have a piece of stainless tubing turned down to the needed size. It would be easy to do. Is there a vocational school near you? A student could do it.

To save alittle money and have a better running for the street a stock or mild uild (Mild cam 258ci_ the merc intake and a 2gc carb will give you all the power you'll ever nees, plus good fuel milage./ Not pretty, but it works.
