You seldom hear about 6v starters running on 12volts pushing the starter ring off the flywheel but it happens. I have seen 3 of them. One of them was mine.
I changed the field coils and converted it to 12 volts. Not difficult but you need a very heavy duty soldering iron.
And as mentioned, use the modern style Bendix drive.
