When I discussed using the high temp RTV, I also showed why I do it. See the closeup shot of the engine block surface.

Torquing to 45 ft. lbs. when installing ends up around 40 ft. lbs. after everything seats. If it makes you cringe, use less torque. That's OK. Remember, the factory didn't use torque wrenches, they just wrenched them very tight. If you see them putting the manifolds on in the assembly line video, they look like they're putting a lot more torque on them than I do.
