Originally the cast parts were painted after coming from the foundry. (likely this was done to allow the cast to season or normalize and prevent major rusting between the foundry time and machining time.) Factory pictures show the pieces were painted prior to machine work being done, -so by theory, any area such as a gasket surface (manifold surface areas too) would all be bare metal without any paint.
Thanks Brent.
My inclination was to paint it to prevent rusting. I justed wanted to make sure there were no functional reasons not to paint. Since I'm brushing, no concern about overspray into the ports.
