Re: 12 volt starter rpm reduction
Don't know how an early starter is constructed but on my Merc engine I used the housing, field windings, brushes, end plate from a NAPA rebuilt Y block 12 volt starter. (about $50).
Took about 20 minutes and seems to have cut down the rpm
