If you want to figure it out for your vehicle:

Determine your shock mount points, these are your measurement points.

Measure the distance between the upper and lower mounting point. This is the length of the shock in the normal ride position.

Jack the frame up on one side until the tire just clears the ground. Measure the distance between the upper and lower mounting point. This is the maximum shock extended length.

Now, with everything back to the normal ride position, jack up the axle on one tire until you get the shortest distance you can between the two mounting points. This measurement is the minimum shock length.

Now you should have the numbers you need to select a shock. The difference between the Maximum and Minimum lengths is the travel.
