My 1929 Roadster has a lockable rumble compartment. So the answer is put your valuables in the lockable Rumble compartment or the trunk of a Roadster.
Not sure about a Phaeton, but I assume a lockable accessory "trunk" at the back would be handy.
I've seen unusual lockable "boxes" of all kinds used in the beds of Roadster Pickups.
