Dave, To get back to the original question, even though the original gear was fiber, I would put in an aluminum one. Replace the gear on the crankshaft at the same time and consider a dynamic dampening pulley. I have had to replace a fiber gear on the side of the road in the 1960's so I don't like the fiber gears.

Is your crank the later one that has the counter weights?
