If you've bought a new stainless steel kitchen sink in the past 10 years or so, they usually come with a few large rectangular pieces of rubber-like, sticky-backed material that's designed to stick onto the bottom and sides of the outer surface for the purpose of sound deadening. I try to swipe one or more of these before the wife notices because they are perfect for repurposing in the application you've asked about Ed. ;-)
