I'll add this in here as I feel it is germane to the conversation. I have heard that the way to initially test an overdrive is to move the "lockout" lever to the "overdrive" position (free-wheeling), put the transmission on gear, and while holding the input shaft stationary, turning the output shaft The output shaft should turn one way, but not the other. If it doesn't turn, the overdrive is probably toast; is this correct?
