He would have probably been OK, but decided to do it on the Main Street in town, should have stayed on the side streets in the neighborhood. The Cop made Dad call my Mom to come and get us kids, Cop did not leave until we were in my Moms car. I remember all us kids were pretty quiet until after the Cop left.

In the late-60s, I'd haul a few buddies around in the bed of my truck, also a 30 CCPU and also in Illinois. Never got stopped but it was a small town in an agricultural community so pickup bed riding was pretty common.
