I repaired a temperature sending unit (they work on the same principle) a few years ago; it was just a matter of cleaning the points. There was even a tiny set screw to adjust them. The BIG problem is getting them apart and the put back together again. They were NOT made for it. It worked fine when I got it back together, but you could tell I had been in there.
