Replacement engines purchased during production could have the number stamped on by a dealer or other shop. Stamp sets were available for Ford engines back in the day. If it was manufactured after production of the model A was over then it would likely be a diamond block with the characteristic casting mark.
Pluck's list is pretty thorough. Most folks set them up as close as possible to OEM but if an engine is already stamped then there is not much that can be done. The frame number is the one that counts the most.
