+1 for the Gano Filter - It has a lobster trap array to retain the rust particles.
My thermostat is below the strainer and will trap the junk. This isn't something that needs to be removed often for cleaning. Once the rust particles are caught from some previous owner not using antifreeze, then there should be no further rusting. If someone like to run plain water, then expect more rust to form.
