My Dad worked in Chevy factory in 29 and 30.
He said when the six cylinder cars came out you could see a few inches of crankshaft sticking out below some workers coats when they left work at the end of a shift.
The guards would just laugh.
I had a customer in San Francisco that was a dock worker.
He drove a Renault Dauphine so he could steal stuff and drive out without the guard looking in the trunk in front, he said the guard only opened the rear where the engine was.
They would stage accidents on the docks so the workers could take whatever broke out of their containers. Workers were allowed to take stuff as insurance companies would pay for the losses. They like to drop loads of shoes.
