A drop of oil on each of the 2 pivot points helps, and you can bend the needle over to center quite easily, but as Ray mentioned, an original is better quality and fit. Original ammeters have black paint on the brass internals, which the repro's I've seen don't. Also repro's use hex nuts on the back and originals use special slotted nuts, like those on the slant pole coils.
