The required gap may be controlled by the need for sufficient clearance between the pieces when opening and closing the lid. You don’t want a perfect looking tight gap that will rub off the paint when you open the trunk lid. It take a bit of fitting to get it right, and be sure there is extra space to allow for paint thickness.
