Another way to deal with a fuel tank is to drain it and either fill it with inert gas or put a bunch of dry ice in it just before starting to weld. Fuel needs air to make a mixture that will ignite. If the car is all together then the whole fuel system needs to be considered since it is all related to the firewall as well.
