Actually made out of discard fabric and some sort of resin but yes, they were flimsy and throwaway. When they get wet the bodies get soft and you can actually push your finger into the panels creating a little divot which slowly swells back into shape...
This particular Trabant was one of about 15 bought and used by the Irish rock band U2 back in 1992 on their world tour as part of a stage prop.
Pictures are of the Trabbi in my garage with my '31 and the other is in front of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland where four other U2 Trabants hang in the front atrium.
